In Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Chapter 28, Geto explains to Mahito that Yuji Itadori doesn’t care much about his own life, so using hostages won’t work on him. Still, Mahito isn’t discouraged. He comes up with a cruel plan to crush Yuji emotionally and drive him into deep anger and despair.
If Junpei’s death isn’t enough, Mahito is ready to slaughter everyone at the school. His goal is to push Yuji into depending on Sukuna and force a Binding Vow that would give Sukuna the advantage.
